There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the border from nearby Thailand, in which casino wagering is prohibited. Eight casinos are based in a generally small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent destination, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of restrictions constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; although, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and though visas are apparently required to cross, there are ways around this, as is true of many borders.
The first Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge gambling hall, features 150 one armed bandits and 60 tables. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the common gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel compound that highlights many comforts in addition to the gambling den, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 tables.
