There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the border from next door Thailand, where casino gaming is against the law. Eight casinos are based in a relatively small area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect spot, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; although, funding sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 1700, and even though visas are supposedly required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is accurate of most borders.
The first Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship casino, features one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga casino is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of 21, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machine games and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel complex that contains a number of amenities on top of the gambling hall, which has ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machines and 88 table games.
